US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ALASKA NATIVE ADULT EDUCATION
ROUSTABOUT TRAINING PROGRAM
This program covers safety procedures, load securement of pipe, hoisting and lifting operations with slings, ropes and forklifts, scaffolding, cribbing and blocking, hazardous materials awareness, and emergency response. Roustabouts carry out general laboring tasks and help to keep the drilling area in good working order.
Roustabout responsibilities include cleaning equipment and work areas, offloading supplies and moving them to storage or job sites, using lift gear to load and stack equipment, general work in the pump room, or mixing and conditioning lubricants for drilling equipment.

HSET TRAINING PROGRAM
The goal of Health, Safety, and Environmental Technician (HSET) program is to produce competent HSE personnel that possess the effective communication skills and working knowledge necessary to develop and maintain a safe worksite.
This is an in-depth course that instructs not only on the regulations but how they apply to the job; how to use the tools of the trade (gas monitors) and why; and the important role permits play in communication across different worksites and work crews.
Participants will acquire the skills needed to protect workers while on the job and ensure that their company meets occupational safety and health requirements.
Training Dates: October 7 - November 8, 2013

Northern Industrial Training Alaska Native Adult Education Program Grant Opportunities

Northern Industrial Training (NIT) has been awarded a grant through the US Department of Education Alaska Native Adult Education Program for the following training programs: Health, Safety & Environmental Technician (HSET) and Roustabout. The grant pays for the cost of the training program but does not cover the support costs such as lodging, transportation, meals, etc.

Alyeska Pipeline Service Company (Alyeska) seeks applications from highly motivated college students currently attending an accredited university, participating in an undergraduate or graduate program in the following disciplines:

Specifically, Alyeska is interested in hiring individuals seeking a future career pathway to participate in a career-specific paid internship program for a term that lasts between 12-16 weeks (depending on assignment) on the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS). Internship positions are available in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Valdez, and at Pump Stations. Crowley Maritime Services is looking for an experienced marine engineering leader who will develop a team of Port and Chief Engineers to achieve our mission as guardians of Prince William Sound. This position is based in Valdez, Alaska and oversees a fleet of 16 vessels that support a world class ship escort and response system in one of the most beautiful and pristine marine environments.
We are looking for a dynamic and resourceful individual that has a deep interest in a system approach to preventive maintenance, sound judgment, intellectual vigor, and a strong record of leadership and teamwork. The successful candidate will be a member of a highly effective leadership team of operations, engineering and operations integrity managers to coach and direct flawless operations. This is a customer facing position with high profile within Crowley. Accordingly, the ideal candidate should have:
· Minimum of 5 to 10 years in marine engineering with 5 years superintendent engineer experience
· Passionate commitment to safe and pollution free operations
· Demonstrated project management and fiscal responsibility for vessels dry docking and repairs
· Proven ability to deal with integrity and command trust across a wide range of stakeholders
· Knowledge and hands-on experience relating to marine engineering preventive and predictive maintenance systems
· Bachelor’s degree or 10 years in the maritime industry

The Native American Small Business Primer: Strategies for Success

The U.S. Small Business Administration launched a new online tool that helps Native American entrepreneurs prepare for business ownership. The Native American Small Business Primer: Strategies for Success is a free online business course developed for Native American entrepreneurs that gives an overview of basic business principles and of the SBA’s programs and services that help business owners get started.
The new primer is an important tool for American Indians, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian business owners that can lend in our nation’s overall economic health through business ownership and creating new jobs. Our ultimate goal is to help spur job creation and to stimulate economic and business development in our Native American communities.
The new course is the ideal business development tool for the entrepreneur’s toolbox that emphasizes business planning and market research as essential steps to take before going into business. The course gives useful first steps to take, and includes a section on how to estimate business start-up costs that help assess the financial needs of starting a business.
SBA’s Office of Native American Affairs works to ensure that American Indian, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiian communities have full access to all SBA programs and services. Each year, more than 200,000 American Indian and Alaska Native and 29,000 Native Hawaiian-owned businesses add billions to the American economy.
